Our 2008 Scholarship Recipient
Lizzie Monroe

|
Lizzie’s love of horses began at a young age, when her parents
gave her a pony party for her 3rd birthday. From
then on, she was completely hooked. Her parents (not having a
horse background) tried to hold her off for a few years first
with ballet and then swimming lessons, but by Lizzie’s 7th
birthday they had to accept that she would not be swayed, and
since then Lizzie and her family have embraced the horse
lifestyle and not looked back.
Lizzie has been a member of Snohomish County 4-H for eight
years. Her 4-H club places an emphasis on community service
and through this Liz has participated in numerous community
service projects through the years including: food drives to
benefit the Sky Valley Food Bank, serving dinners to
firefighters in Monroe and Snohomish, numerous fundraising
events to benefit several horse rescue organizations, gift
wrapping at Christmas. In addition, Lizzie (with her best
friend) organized a dog agility show for residents of an
assisted living center and the following year convinced her
4-H club to participate. This event has been held by her 4-H
club every year since.
Lizzie has competed at the State level for 4-H Horse Judging
five years in a row, one year earning Top Oral Reasons at
State and two years earning Top Written Reasons at the County
level. She has also participated in Horse Bowl and Hippology
(both knowledge-based contests) the past three years.
For AHA Region Five, Lizzie was the 2005 4-H Category Reserve
High Point, 2005 Open Category Reserve High Point, and the
2006 4-H Category Reserve High Point. She was also a member
of the 2006 AHA Region Five Youth Judging Team (alternate
member) traveling to Louisville, KY and 2007 AHA Region Five
Youth Judging Team member traveling to Albuquerque, NM. In
her first year as a regular team member, Liz placed 9th
in Oral Reasons at the national contest.
The past three years, Lizzie has added outside work to her
long list of accomplishments and credentials, working as a
barn helper cleaning stalls three afternoons per week after
school and is currently working two nanny/child care positions
three afternoons per week after school, all while maintaining
a position on the Honor Roll at school and holding a 3.78
GPA. Lizzie is an outstanding scholar who takes her academics
seriously and is well liked by her classmates, being voted
Freshman Class ASB Representative. She also enjoys continued
involvement in the International Club and has organized and
held a Family Movie Night fundraiser for the Class of 2010 at
her high school.

Our 2008 Scholarship Recipient
Gianne Souza

|
Gianne Souza was born on the Subic Naval Base, Olongapo City,
in the Philippines in the year 1988. When Mt. Pinatubo
erupted three years later, she and her family were
evacuated by air to Hawaii, and then relocated to the Evergreen
State shortly after. She developed an early love of horses
under the guiding influence of her grandfather, Charles
Strickland, and began riding at a local pony farm formerly
named Penny
Creek. Her attendance there ended after she was kicked in the
back, and she moved to the Academy of Horsemanship of Cedar
Spring Stables. There she switched from western gaming to
zone level Hunter shows and learned how to work as a stable
hand to support her "horse habit". As a zone level rider
Gianne had won many awards, including a nearly clean sweep of
every yearly Overall Award offered by the Hollywood Hill
Saddle Club in 2003, but felt that there was more to learn and
do. It was then that she came in contact with Joan Shelton-Palelek,
who helped usher her in to the Arabian Show Circuit. Gianne
and her horse Northwind Venture ("the Big Grey") moved to
Vantage Point Farm II, ltd., where, under the scrutiny of Ron
Palelek and Jaime Eagle, she learned more things about
Huntseat Equitation and general horsemanship that she ever
thought possible. Gianne received a Top Ten Huntseat
Equitation 14-17 at the Arabian Canadian Nationals in 2005,
her crowning achievement as a junior rider. In addition to
horses, she is currently a senior partial International
Baccalaureate and Advanced Placement student at Edmonds-Woodway
High School, a grower of carnivorous plants, a spontaneous
clay sculptor, and a voracious reader. She plans to attend Washington
State University Honors College and attain a Doctor of
Veterinary Medicine, primarily focusing on the Equines she has
loved all her life.
